When Bushnell started out to build 100 Atari machines each day against everyone’s advice, he could not have imagined that he would complete his goal within just 2 months. After two months Bushnell started making 100 machines per day which was a great feat.
Bushnell wanted to make a home version of Pong, he believed that home version of Pong will be much successful than the arcade game market. He had a dream that one day every American home with have his Atari console. That way he wanted to change the American society and culture. He wanted every family member of every household to enjoy his console and become addicted to it.
Bushnell hit a major boost when he was able to create a Pong chip which cost him only $10 and then he was able to sell it for $100. The huge profits he made here enabled him to do mass production of the chip. That way he realised his dream of distributing home version of Pong of Atari to every household. In the initial stages, Bushnell found it hard to convince a store to sell his home version of Atari game. Eventually, the day came when Sears sporting goods store agreed and started distributing Pong for home-version.
The game was meant to appeal to both young and adult alike. Only after 1st commercial viewing, the order of the game skyrocketed and the game was immediately sold out for even the next year. Atari console took the whole nation by storm. Atari instantly broke all the records, mostly due to Pong success and demolished their competitors and became most popular console in the gaming console industry.
Every Arcade across the nation was filled with Pong console machines. Weather it was a Christmas or birthday, it was a dream of every young child to get an Atari as a present. Home entertainment was redefined. People, both young and old no longer wanted to sit in front of a television and watch TV. Now, for the 1st time in history, people could also interest with the TV screen though Atari console. Atari console also became the motivation and stepping stone for the gaming industry.
Modern powerful games would not have reached this status if Atari had not set the ground work. The most revolutionary thing about Atari was to connect the console to a television screen. Even the controllers that were used in the Atari console were designed to be user friendly and they could be easily used while relaxing on bed or couch. The Joysticks on the Atari also brought excitement for the player and provided thorough enjoyment. Many of today’s game controllers follow the same basic principles introduced by Atari.
